Drainage fields

A Drainage field (soakaway) is an installation of perforated pipes installed as a discharge for effluent discharging from a septic tank or treatment plant to the ground.

The pipes are normally surrounded by aggregate and covered in a porous membrane or polythene.

Older installations were normally clay pipes butted together and backfilled with dirt.

Understanding Drainage Fields:

It is important to remember that a drainage field operates as a natural treatment process within the soil and, as such, its long-term performance cannot be guaranteed indefinitely. Factors such as soil type, groundwater levels, usage patterns, and the accumulation of solids over time can impact its effectiveness.

Gilson environmental can install replacement drainage fields to prolong the life of your sewage system if the system is compliant with the general binding rules.

Common signs of failure:

  • The septic tank requires emptying more frequently
  • Foul drains may sit with water and not run clear
  • You notice a gurgling when you flush the toilet or let a bath drain
  • The garden has a wet lush green patch
  • Sewage overspills happen frequently

The general reason systems reliant on a drainage field fail is due to the drainage field becoming over worked and the ground not keeping up with the speed of effluent flow to ground absorption.
